A distinguished Victorian town house, grounds and coach house.
The Victorian coach house, a hallmark of 19th-century architecture served as a functional space for housing horse-drawn carriages and the horses themselves. Often attached to grand estates, these structures showcased intricate designs and craftsmanship typical of the Victorian era. With advent of the automobile, many coach houses fell into disrepair or were repurposed, but they remain a fascinating glimpse into a time when travel was synonymous with elegance and leisure. Today, they are often restored celebrated as charming historical landmarks.
The Arncliffe house and grounds was first occupied in 1869 by a cotton mill owner Joshua Smith. His mill, First Holme Mill, based in Tormendon was forty miles away. While a private coach couldn’t manage the distances needed his coach played an important role in Mr Smiths commute to Manchester Central Station where upon he would take steam locomotion to his mill.
Mr Smith on his death left the equivalent of £fourteen million pounds to his estate and his widow remained in the home for a number of years. Sadly the house, grounds and coach house fell into disrepair.
The house and grounds have been lovingly brought back to its original charm, whilst being sympathetically modernised. The coach house is the newest project, converting the stables, coach house and coach mans quarters into a modern, vibrant and tranquil private dwelling.
